Crafty Trout Brewery – Taupo

Discover Crafty Trout Brewery in Taupo, blending Austrian beer hall charm with Kiwi fishing vibes. Enjoy craft beers, delicious food, and a cozy, quirky atmosphere.

Nestled in the heart of Taupo, like a well-baited hook in the clearest of waters, you’ll find the Crafty Trout Brewery at 131-135 Tongariro Street. This isn’t just a brewery; it’s an experience, a glorious collision of Austrian beer hall charm and a Kiwi bloke’s slightly obsessive fishing shed fantasy.

First things first, let’s talk logistics. Parking in Taupo can sometimes feel like trying to land a feisty rainbow trout on a windy day, but fear not! Crafty Trout offers limited parking onsite, which is a definite bonus. If you miss out on those spots, the surrounding streets usually offer options, just be prepared for a short stroll – think of it as a pre-beer warm-up.

Once you’ve navigated the parking currents, prepare to be greeted by their opening hours: The Bier Kafe upstairs is ready to quench your thirst from 12 midday to 10 pm, Wednesday to Monday. Brewery tours are also available daily at 1 pm, except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but it’s best to call ahead to book your deep dive into the brewing process.

Now, let’s get to the star of the show: the beer. Crafted with the pristine alpine volcanic water Taupo is famous for, their range of 14 taps is a delightful mix of Austrian-inspired lagers, approachable ales, and even a cider or two for the less hop-inclined. You’ll find brews with wonderfully fishy names like the “Hook” (a Vienna Lager, smooth and malty), the “Line” (a New Zealand Pale Ale with citric and passionfruit notes), and the mysteriously potent “Downrigger” (an Imperial Red Ale). For the adventurous, keep an eye out for their more experimental offerings – they aren’t afraid to get a little crafty!

But it’s not just about what’s in your glass; it’s about where you’re drinking it. The decor at Crafty Trout is… memorable. Imagine a hunting lodge that’s been invaded by a fishing tackle shop, with a dash of Austrian beer hall thrown in for good measure. Think rustic wood, the occasional mounted (hopefully not too judgmental) animal head, and subtle nods to the region’s trout fishing heritage. It’s quirky, it’s cozy, and it certainly gives you something to talk about (especially after a couple of their stronger brews).

Having been around since January 2011, Crafty Trout has established itself as a local favourite and a must-visit for those passing through Taupo. They’ve even snagged accolades like being voted the “Best Pub and Bar in Town” by Restaurant Guru in 2021, so they’re clearly doing something right (besides the slightly eccentric decor).

Beyond the beer, they also offer a tempting food menu featuring wood-fired pizzas and those legendary freshly baked pretzels – the perfect ballast for a session on the “Sinker Porter” (which boasts lovely coffee and chocolate notes, by the way). And if you’re looking for a unique souvenir, the downstairs Trout Shoppe offers everything from trout-themed gifts to perhaps a fly-fishing lure to impress the locals (or at least confuse them).

Overall, Crafty Trout Brewery provides a memorable experience with its own character, a solid selection of craft beers, satisfying food, and a relaxed environment. It’s a place worth checking out for those seeking a local flavour.

This was one of our favorite place to stop when we are passing Taupo. We were looking forward to dining again for the first time in few years as they had some renovations previous time we drove pass Taupo. They had a very friendly waitress and served us water straight away. We just wanted small meal so ordered platter for two and we had drinks. Tiny glass of cider and beer as we thought it was quite pricy compared to other brewery we have been to in our experience. Nice drinks tho. But platter was quite average. When my husband was eating squid ring oil squirt out, it was very hot! He didn't complain much but i thought its fair to say this shouldn't even happen . For the price we pay we expected a bit more care in cooking. We want to recommend to others but not the food menu or experiences we remembered has the owner changed? I hope to see this place do well. Such a iconic place I remembered each visit.

We were really looking forward to visiting The Crafty Trout Brewery, but unfortunately the food experience was very disappointing, especially for the price. Meals were $30–$40 for a schnitzel that was an average size at best, served with a very small salad. The kids’ meals were far from ideal — a ham and cheese toasty made with a stale, crusty roll and barely any chips, which felt pretty poor value. It was cool to see they had games available for families, but most of the pieces were missing, so they weren’t really usable. On a positive note, the beers were definitely the highlight and the best part of the visit. Overall though, for the cost of the meals, it just wasn’t worth it on the food front and left us pretty disappointed.

Starters were delicious, but the cold plated mains disappointed. Can't fault the meat, but minimal sauce and bland but nicely crunchy veg. The plate had me crunching a cold carrot after a few minutes. The light wheat beer I had hopes for but it was lifeless and far from wheaty. It was a shame. Had better in there previously.

Micky and team are awesome hosts. Absolutely insightful about their brewing philosophy and making you feel part of their brewery. Although we were only there for a few short hours our experience of Taupō would not have been the same without them. Generous beyond belief. IPA and boutique wines are a standout. Cheers, Chris

The place is cute but the food is genuinely not good. I asked for a chicken salad with no feta and they added feta. My friend got the burger which was not good at all. We barely ate any of our food. They charged me a different price than what was on my receipt. I was charged $92 NZ yet my receipt said $78 NZ. Sketchy.
