Vilagrad Winery, established in 1922 by Ivan Milicich Snr, stands as a testament to over a century of winemaking excellence in New Zealand’s Waikato region. Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, the winery has evolved into a premier destination for wine enthusiasts, food lovers, and those seeking a unique venue for special occasions.

A Legacy of Winemaking

The Milicich family’s journey began in 1893 when Ivan Milicich Snr emigrated from Podgora on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia to New Zealand. By 1922, he had established a vineyard and obtained a license to produce and sell wine, laying the foundation for what would become Vilagrad Winery. Today, the winery is managed by Pieter and Nelda Nooyen, along with their sons, who continue to honor traditional winemaking methods while embracing modern techniques.
Large numbers of settlers from the Dalmatian coast arrived in New Zealand in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many first working as kauri gumdiggers in Northland before turning to horticulture and wine. Their families helped shape early vineyards around Northland and Auckland, bringing cellar traditions and field practices from coastal Croatia. The Milicich story sits within this migration, linking Podgora heritage to a wider chapter in New Zealand viticulture.

Award-Winning Wines

Vilagrad Winery offers an exquisite range of multi-award-winning wines, each carefully hand-harvested and crafted to reflect the unique climate and soils of the region. Their portfolio includes varietals sourced from renowned New Zealand wine regions:

  • Gisborne Chardonnay: Celebrated for its rich, full-bodied flavor with notes of tropical fruit and a hint of oak.
  • Wairarapa Pinot Noir: Known for its elegant structure, featuring cherry and plum flavors with subtle earthy undertones.
  • Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc: A crisp and refreshing wine, offering vibrant citrus and passionfruit aromas.

Marlborough remains the country’s largest wine region by area and is internationally associated with citrus and passionfruit driven Sauvignon Blanc. Gisborne is known for generous, sun-ripened Chardonnay styles, while Wairarapa, centered on Martinborough with Masterton and Gladstone nearby, produces Pinot Noir with fine tannins and aromatic lift. Sourcing from these regions supports varietals that express recognized regional strengths across New Zealand.
These wines have garnered an impressive 105 medals and awards over the past two decades, underscoring the family’s dedication to quality and excellence.

Quite a bit-of-aways to get there but really worth it. Very authentic and rustic look with nostalgia items of history. Love how the vineyard is looks so big and especially how it grows in the building like sitting under a green blanket. Live music band 😎👍 and excellent service. There's live ambience when having a meal. Awesome stay!
